Why use a lawyer to file your next property tax appeal?

3 Reasons to Hire a Property Tax Lawyer

So you may have heard, “there is no need to hire a property tax attorney because you can just do the appeal yourself.” I too am a fan of doing things yourself, but before you start reading up on property tax law, here are the top 3 reasons why you should consider using an attorney for your next property tax appeal:

1) Time –
The truth is: You’re busy. You may have kids, work, or a host of other interests that compete for your time. Learning the ins-and-outs of the Cook County Property Tax System is probably not at the top of your “To Do” list. When you use an attorney, that attorney will know the deadlines, can file the appeal on your behalf, and can free you up to care of the things that really matter in life.

2) Knowledge/Skill –
There are 3 common grounds for appealing your property tax assessments: 1) Lack of Uniformity; 2) Overvaluation; and/or 3) Errors in assessments. Arguing one, two, or all 3 grounds may be the best way to obtain a reduction in your property tax assessment. Your attorney will research your property and determine a strategy to present an effective case.

3) You only pay your attorney if you win –
My goal is to save you money! If I am unsuccessful in helping you keep YOUR money in YOUR pocket, then my services are FREE.

Note: This is not the case for all attorneys. There are a few folks out there that charge a flat fee (win or lose) and you should always read any contract before signing it.
